György Kurtág

György Kurtag composed Hölderlin-Gesänge between 1993 and 1997. It consists of five of Hölderlin’s most famous poems of the late period, and one poem by Paul Celan from Die Niemandsrose, closing the cycle and rounding off the concept of madness, still sometimes latent in Hölderlin, but always very appropriately expressed by Kurtag, and then fully evident in Celan’s text. The cycle is for baritone solo, with the exception of no. 3 which adds a trombone and a tuba.
